Phonographs with non 'original' horns.

Post by kirtley2012 »

Would you consider it bad or wrong using something like an all brass horn on a Edison fireside? when they were only ever intended to use a cygnet, fireside or witches hat horn?

Why not? You are not doing anything to modify the Fireside. The Fireside was manufactured at the end of the horn era and probably very few had after market horns but I see no reason not to use a horn that pleases you. Jerry

Hi Kirtley
Seems I remember this being brought up before, but I agree with Jerry. Hang the horn you like on your Fireside. Back in the day when you walked into the music shop you had other option available for a added fee other than what came out of the factory. For larger horns on smaller machines there was a crane with a extra foot to keep the machine from tipping forward. Also a crane that come's from the back of the machine instead of the front will hold a larger horn without tipping.
Best Regards, Larry

Thanks guys
The horn in question is an all brass, 26" x 15" horn which I have found, a while ago I made a floor crane fron an old camera tripod, if I can find that then that should do a good job at keeping the horn and machine stable

Good idea. I have one that was made from an old music stand.
