Not only are these among to coolest looking Edisons, but they play like champs as well!

Not to mention the nifty automatic shut-off feature. They're also quite a lot louder than I'd ever expected. I really enjoy my V a lot. Mine is Mahigany and has a metal grill. I'd wondered if it should have had a wooden one, but the little groove where the grill rests isn't anywhere near wide enough to accomoadte a wooden one.

The Edison Phono Works seems to have experimented with metal front grilles in 1914. I've seen Amberola Vs with them, as well as Diamond Disc B-80s. I kind of like them - something different.

Edisone,
No need to justify the purchase of that machine. It's very nice! Enjoy it!!!!

Yes, I just looked up in Frow's book that metal grills were used sometime during 1914, but before the December fire.
The Mahagony V currently on ebay looks to be missing its governor and flywheel cover.
Regarding no further bids on the oak, I'd guess that there might have been some bidder fatigue as the machine went through a couple reserve price adjustments before being sold. Still, it's a fine buy!

Thanks for the info George and Bob! I didn't really have a reason to believe mine wasn't correct, it came from a collection that was decades old via a very trustworthy dealer. I did think it was odd only since I'd only seen them in wood in person.

It was a photo of an oak Amberola V with a box of blue and purple Amberol records, in a parlor, in Ideals magazine, I saw when I was about 5 years old that sparked my interest in antique talking machines. I had never seen one in person at this time, and by 9 I started seeing machines in local antique stores and got to hear some and really liked them, just could not afford them until I was a little older.

I may have no fingernails left, after the next 24 hours. Some things seem legit, like his 12 year record with Ebay, good "feedback" and his offer of local pickup, but other things bother me. The Craigslist ad is still active, he says his Dad left this Edison to him (I would never sell anything left to me!), the pics show a shingled house but every house on his block appears to be stucco, etc.
If I don't get the promised UPS tracking number tomorrow, all bets are off!
