Suggest keeping after the cleaning, perhaps using a soft toohbrush on the really alligatored parts.
When cleaning removes no more dirt, then a "rinse" with mineral spirits, thorough drying, and consideration about re-amalgamation to address the alligatored finish and chipped areas where there is finish-loss.
Are there any forum members near you that have successfully performed finish re-amalgamation (having a tough time spelling this word today...)
