Thanks for posting David. Yes Sousa's "Liberty Bell" is an excellent way to show off your cylinder phono and also an all around excellent tune.

My parents came to Europe with some friends of thiers about a year ago. I did a phono concert one night with my E model Triumph. Since my parent's friends were both band majors in high school I played mostly marches and alot of Sousa. The still talk about this as one of the highlights of thier trip.

Great list of cylinders Shane!

Valecnik, you are right in that. Marches are great to show off your machine. Military band cylinders come out so loud and clear!

Liberty Bell is a brilliant cylinder......and Neophone's machine also more than does it justice. If I'm not mistaken that is Mordeth's own fireplace in the background?

Beside marches, instrumental solos are also good when you want to show off your cylinder phonograph. Especially banjo and xylophone records. Fred Van Eps and Charles Daab records always comes trough loud and clear.

I would imagine that Vess L. Ossman's banjo solos were among the clearest recordings during the brown wax era.

Rocky,

You are right in that, I have heard some of his brown wax records and they sound very clear.

Here is one example each of a banjo and a xylophone record recorded during the 1890s on brown wax cylinder:

"Darkies patrol"
by Vess L. Ossman
Columbia 3817 (recorded between 1896 and 1900)

Paal,

How do you find your cylinders? You have an amazing collection of mid-to-late 20s dance band BAs that include the Georgia Melodians, Earl Oliver's Jazz Babies, the Atlantic Dance Orchestra, the Tennessee Happy Boys, B. A. Rolfe, and others. These are not the easiest ones to find.

I get my dance band cylinders off eBay.
They pop up once in a while, but not as often as the more regular BA's.
