Favorite Cylinders.

Post by Paal1994 »

I collect Blue Amberol cylinders and I thought maybe you other collectors have some cylinders you would like to recommend to others. Not only BA's but all types of cylinders.

Billy Murray's cylinders are always good, his duets with Ada Jones are some of the best you can get of early recording duets in my opinion. Collins & Harlan is also records you can't go wrong with.

The cylinders I have listed here are some of the best I have.

#1625 "Sweet Adeline" by Royal Fish & Chorus
#1730 "William Tell Fantasie" by Charles Daab
#1743 "The Trail of the Lonesome Pine" by Manuel Romain
#1765 "Where the Sunset Turns the Ocean's Blue To Gold" by Byron G. Harlan
#2666 "Shadowland" by Jaudas' Society Orchestra
#3639 "Oh! How I Hate To Get Up in the Morning" by Arthur Fields
#3673 "The Worst is Yet to Come" by Billy Murray
#4772 "Yes! We Have No Bananas" by Green Bros. Novelty Band
#4908 "Radio" by the Atlantic Dance Orchestra & Arthur Hall
#5136 "Thanks For the Buggy Ride" by Earl Oliver's Jazz Babies
#5159 "Spanish Shawl" by the Georgia Melodians
#5359 "The Doll Dance" by B.A. Rolfe & His Palais D'or Orchestra
#5476 "Henry's Made a Lady of Lizzie" by Billy Jones & Ernest Hare

Paal,

Thanks for sharing your list—I can’t say I know too many of these off the top of my head, but I have mp3s of them, to which I’ve linked over at the Cylinder Preservation and Digitization Project:

#1625Sweet Adeline” by Royal Fish & Chorus
#1730William Tell Fantasie” by Charles Daab
#1743The Trail of the Lonesome Pine” by Manuel Romain
#1765Where the Sunset Turns the Ocean’s Blue To Gold” by Byron G. Harlan
#3639Oh! How I Hate To Get Up in the Morning” by Arthur Fields
#3673The Worst is Yet to Come” by Billy Murray
#4772Yes! We Have No Bananas” by Green Bros. Novelty Band

They don’t have MP3s (yet, at any rate) for:

#2666 “Shadowland" by Jaudas’ Society Orchestra
#4908 “Radio” by the Atlantic Dance Orchestra & Arthur Hall
#5136 “Thanks For the Buggy Ride” by Earl Oliver's Jazz Babies
#5159 “Spanish Shawl” by the Georgia Melodians
#5359 “The Doll Dance” by B.A. Rolfe & His Palais D’or Orchestra
#5476 “Henry’s Made a Lady of Lizzie’ by Billy Jones & Ernest Hare

And John and I recorded “The Trail of the Lonesome Pine” by Manuel Romain for YouTube:

[youtubehq]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sX3lxO9ihnQ[/youtubehq]
Thanks for the Buggy Ride” is another song I know, although I cannot say that I‘ve heard the Earl Oliver version.

I can‘t say that I listen to cylinders enough to name favorites off the top of my head, but perhaps other members might wish to suggest their favorites.

MordEth,
Thank you for linking the songs to MP3 files! The Cylinder Preservation and Digitization Project is a great website, isn't it?
I have the rest of the songs, except "Henry's Made a Lady Out of Lizzie" on my YouTube page. But I will post that one soon...

Paal, that is a great list of BA's. I have Lonesome Pine and yes! we have no bannanas. I love both of these. I think I would add "Whispering" by the Green Bros Novelty Orchestra.

It would be difficult to assemble a list of favorite cylinders, not only because there are so many, but also because the list would be thrown askew by the fact that post-1915 BAs were also available on DD. If the list contained these later cylinders, it might be more accurately described as a list of favorite Edison records and not just cylinders.

How nice it would be to have been alive when the cylinders were contemporary and to be able to buy new ones in pristine condition all the time. All one's favorites would be there for the asking.

I wish I had been a kid in 1905. I would have been an angel child, performing all my chores, so I could collect my $500 weekly allowance and then run down to the local Edison dealer and buy everything I wanted.

I only have one working cylinder machine at the moment and less than 10 cylinders, but my favorite of them ends with a nice little Yankee / Dixie medley.

Cylinder: Blue Amberol #2325
Artist: New York Military Band
Year: 1914
Title: Fourth Of July Patrol

Rocky,

It would be great to live back in time when you could buy new cylinders and phonographs. It would be great to have a time machine and go back to the late 20's and buy those late and rare Blue Amberol's :D

You have some good ones there. Look for "Palesteena", and if you like to show off your machine marches are nice. "Stars and Sripes Forever" by Sousa's band is especially brilliant. There are many others too.

I agree; John and I had a lot of fun with Sousa’s “Liberty Bell March”, which is by far his most-watched video (with a margin of approximately 2,200 views at the moment). Although I think that a lot of the traffic on that is because of Monty Python and students in marching bands.

I’m still amazed by how many times this has been viewed (31,500 as of posting this).

And here’s Shane’s list (above), linked to MP3s. They had all but the last 2 songs.

#1540Under the big September moon” — Campbell & Gillette
#1563Aunt Dinah’s golden wedding” — Empire Vaudeville Co
#1712Darky school days” — Golden & Hughes
#1876Characteristic Negro medley” — Peerless Quartette
#2098Every little movement” — Narelle & Potter (Fred, not Harry)
#2197Pussy cat rag” — Ada Jones
#2839I love a piano” — Van Brunt
#3266My Yokohama girl” — Arthur Fields
