According to Ron Dethlefson's BA books, they did experiment with shellac to make cylinders, but apparently without any kind of success.
Condensite has the same problems, as you cannot press it like a disc. A cylinder mould has to be seamless, thus, if you do not pour a liquid into it, the material itself has to be pressed against the mould. Celluloid did serve these requirements quite well, but a thick and massive material such as shellac or condensite just couldn't do the trick.

Re: Omitted Titles on Edison
Another BA-only title. Sorry for the poor video quality. I need to re-do this one!

WDC wrote:Edison wasn't actually very fond of his Blue Amberols, the cylinder format in general was very much preferred but the celluloid always reminded him of the patent issues he had with Lambert and that using this material was not his original idea.
Edison was also very much involved with anything else (portland cement, iron ore, etc.) but taking care of the phonograph department. Only during his later days he would pay more attention to hit (which made things worse, of course).
However, there have been some titles or takes released as dubbed cylinders only. According to personal notes, at least some of these were considered to be only good enough for cylinder but not for disc. Again, talking about dubbed (post-1914) cylinders only.
Btw. 'Fire!' was released on BA.
It would be nice to have plastic resin copies of "FIRE!" made. I loaned Rob over at Edisonia copies of some records and he made nice resin copies of them. I also received my originals back in same condition. He does a great job making blue amberol copies. I would definitely purchase a copy of fire.
