Will this horn crane fit my Edison Standard D?

Where exactly are these "eyes"? The APS article on the Standard does not mention these.

Most likely, the "suitcase" models would have used a floor crane for a larger horn.

My suitcase has two round hole crane mounts in the back for a crane. and requires a smaller horn The crane extends over the machine. Maybe this is what you have.. Tom B

Yes, I am thinking that style is correct as well. What size horn are you using?

Also, my understanding is that there are two styles of mounts or "eyes"... the early ones like I have are flatter against the cabinet than yours are. I understand the later ones were made longer to allow the crane to clear the post 1901 redesigned cabinets where the bed plate frame had a "lip" that extended past the side of the cabinet slightly.

The "eyes" illustrated are the brackets for a Hawthorne & Sheble No.4 crane. While there is no single "correct" crane for a 2-clip Standard (Edison did not supply a crane with the Standard until Oct. 1907), the No.4 or (as Bill points out) a floor crane were often used with the early Standards and Homes.

George is correct in assuming that the No.4 brackets were modified to clear the wooden motor frames that were integral to the 1901 "New Style" cabinets supplied with Edison Phonographs. The "New Style" cabinets presented an opportunity for H&S to design a new crane that was highly adaptable and did not require drilling holes in the cabinets. That was the No.5, which (judging by the number of survivors) was the most popular crane the company ever offered.

If it didn't already have the mounting eyes on the cabinet I would use the floor crane and huge horn I have languishing in storage for this machine but since the mounts are on there I want to find a period correct horn and crane to make use of them.

A 30" long horn is about the limit - despite what the last sentence of the ad says! The upper support is limited in length, and a horn that's too long or too heavy will overbalance the machine. For what it's worth, I have a 30" all-brass horn on a 4-clip Standard supported by a No.4 and it works fine.
