Here's another great (better?) idea from our own martinola:

IIRC, when the limit pin is catching up to the loop, it's not usually a reproducer problem, it's a horn problem. The horn needs to be bent slightly to correct this. There's info about this in the Edison Disc Motor Manual which is posted elsewhere on the board.

You're correct Kevin. Or when dropping the reproducer down for play, it contacts the groove in an already forward (toward the spindle) position, and the groove of the record - if it's a loooong recording - can advance the stylus (and thus the weight which pivots) a bit faster than the horn progresses over the course of playing the record, causing the limit pin to contact the limit loop.
I guess we got a bit OT...
Thanks for bringing us back to the OP.

Fran

Interesting. How does the horn advance along with the record?? Does the stylus move everything?
I have been curious about this for awhile

There is a gearing mechanism that advances the horn at the same speed as the grooves in the record. The stylus doesn't drive anything.
You can read more about the motor and your problem here:

awesome thanks!
I think I will rebuild the reproducer in a few weeks when I have the time. Ill reply to this post after I rebuild it.
