I doubt that this case was originally intended for cylinder records. However, there was nothing to prevent the original owner from using it for that purpose. I've encountered a number of suitcases/grips in the wild full of cylinder records.

The problem with this one is that it appears (correct me if I'm wrong) that the flap was secured by two leather straps (now missing I presume). I've never encountered a catalog (U.S. or European) that offers a cylinder record case secured like that. Hooks, clips, even suitcase-style locking spring clips are typical, but not all- encompassing leather straps.

Like Jerry, I see no sign of compartments having been present - - just the marks left by over 100 years' storage of records.

Would this have had cardboard pegs? Or how would it have held the boxes?

Your box started life with divided sections you can see the witness marks clearly on the lid where the sections and cylinders without boxes were positioned, it would have had sections like this which have been removed at some time

For the life of me, I can only see the one witness line that aligns with the slot. I see no other lines. Maybe your eyes are better than mine...

David, since you have the case in front of you, do you see more than the one witness mark?

No I do not see any other marks on the case that would make me believe that it was a cylinder carrying case. Whether it is a carrying case or not... it works good for displaying them for the time being. I don't have a place to put them :( . I do not think that I would actually carry cylinders in this box... mostly because its missing the latches and handle.

Here are a few more pictures.
