So I guess you use the solvent to basically re amalgamate the surface. Interesting - this might help solve some of my cabinet issues.

Thanks for all the extra restoration tips that I did not know before. Fantastic cabinet. I wish I was not so afraid of the intricacies of old radio's as to also buy one!

Basically, yes. Just be VERY careful with MEK. Too much and you'll remove what finish was there to begin with. You really need a tiny artist's brush just touching the area for a second. Experiment on an area not readily visible. It takes time and patience, but done correctly, you'll find it does a great job!

Looks like a really fun project to me I'm building off your theme of "before and after." Here's some inspiration of sorts with the first Edison diamond disc player I bought for myself, an S-19 in fumed oak.

Tarheel that looks great. I love those machines. I sold one years ago...to my eternal regret. Is it the earlier version that has the pull down door like yours? I think so.

I can second that- I mucked up the top surface of an Electrola with a misuse of MEK- but the surface was very bad to begin with. On the plus side it's an excellent stripper if you want to remove old lacquer cleanly.

Hello Jim,

It is indeed. The door was in sorry shape, with someone using the wrong length screws to attach the stop bar (and in so doing "bump out" the front of the veneer on the door). I changed out the screws and actually completely disassembled the storage slat area to clean behind it.

And two discoveries I found with the player:

Here are some pictures of the amplifier after a total restoration and cleaning. It was covered in a thin layer of wax inside and out.I have no idea where the wax came from but the board the amplifier is bolted to was covered in a thick layer of red wax. I removed all the parts cleaned checked and replaced. Three of the four large resistors were bad. I took wirewound resistors broke off the ceramic case and stuffed them inside the old ones.I'll have more pictures soon.

i see the 2 type 81 rectifiers, and i would have thought an amp chassis of this vintage would use a #10 or #50 as an output, but i can't make out what that big tube on the right is, or the tube to the left of the rectifiers.
My smaller, just a wee bit newer Electrola uses a type 50 output.
