You have a master, also known as a "father". These were made directly from the wax disc that was recorded on and later used to generate the "mothers".

So it goes like this....

The wax (or acetate, or lacquer...) recording blank is plated....
The metal part separated from the wax (or similar) recording is the "master" or "father". This is a negative record.
The surface of the master is chemically deactivated and then plated.
The plating on the master is removed and is then the "mother". This is a positive record.
The mother is then separated and deactivated (like the father) and used in a similar process to make stampers.

Before the copyright laws were standardized by the Federal government, in some states, the person who owner the master owned the copyright. I have no idea is owning the master still entitles an owner to any title in copyright law.
