Harkness,
In keeping with the theme of educating ourselves with available research material, all of your questions can be answered by reading the definitive book about Edison Cylinder Phonographs by George Frow. This is a standard hobby publication that should be in everyone’s library. Buy a copy and read it. Afterwards please ask for points of clarification or advice from collectors with first-hand experience. We’ll be glad to guide you.
