Remove the 4 screws holding the nickel plated cover over the spring and lift the cover off. I wonder if there is something in there under the spring that is making it tip towards the gear as it unwinds. I have owned a couple N0. 3s and also trademarks and have never seen this problem. Rather than a sagging spring I am wondering about something affecting its vertical axis.

I cannot see any reason for the droopy spring other than it is not the correct size. I checked Brians replacements at The Phonograph Shop and it is 1" wide not ⅞" .
There appears to be a flat piece of thin metal under the spring. Presumably a guide?
I would like to replace the spring with one of the correct size but I cannot figure out the correct way to remove the spring with no barrell to support it.
I appreciate any advice on proceed?

The cover will not come off as the cross pin on the winding shaft needs to be removed , a press fit I take it?
Then how does the now loose frame with the spring attached come away from the wining shaft/arbour safely?
