Inigo wrote: Sat Aug 10, 2024 6:14 pm Examining the photos I would suggest that 1) the spring is misplaced, and the vertical axis of the first gear seems trapped between the coils; shouldn't the sitting coils be at the side of that shaft? 2) is the spring the correct size?
The spring doesn't look right to me, either... it looks too big.

Remove the 4 screws holding the nickel plated cover over the spring and lift the cover off. I wonder if there is something in there under the spring that is making it tip towards the gear as it unwinds. I have owned a couple N0. 3s and also trademarks and have never seen this problem. Rather than a sagging spring I am wondering about something affecting its vertical axis.

I cannot see any reason for the droopy spring other than it is not the correct size. I checked Brians replacements at The Phonograph Shop and it is 1" wide not ⅞" .
There appears to be a flat piece of thin metal under the spring. Presumably a guide?
I would like to replace the spring with one of the correct size but I cannot figure out the correct way to remove the spring with no barrell to support it.
I appreciate any advice on proceed?

Per GramoGeorg:
Remove the 4 screws holding the nickel plated cover over the spring and lift the cover off.

Thank you,
The cover will not come off as the cross pin on the winding shaft needs to be removed , a press fit I take it?
Then how does the now loose frame with the spring attached come away from the wining shaft/arbour safely?
