Some old Pathé literature instructs that, basically, the deeper you seat the saphire stylus into the chuck on the reproducer the louder the sound will be, but I can't tell much difference.

That's strange. I have always thought the exact opposite. I would think the more needle exposed, the more leverage would be obtained which would amplify the sound. I'm going to have to try that out now! Thanks for posting that!
