Very funny! Seriously I went to do a really good inspection this time. The reproducer is definitely real, although the stylus bar has come off the diaphragm, but cleanly. The crank is a repro. The phonograph itself seems to be a little of a transitional Washington/NY mongrel with a NY case decal, but the serial plate saying Graphophone Co. of Washington DC serial # in the 57000 block (obviously they had more bedplates than decals laying around in 1897 at the transition), and the early leaves and berries. The case itself is a little rough on the bottom, wood is VERY dry, and splintering in some spots. The motor is fine (one spring no barrel) and runs properly. No pot metal. Because the CAPS show is coming up and I am looking forward to spending some money there, I'm going to wait and see, especially since (no offense to Graphophone collectors) I've never really warmed to them. Who knows after though, I could be needing a purchase fix. Thanks to everyone on the forum for being real helpful on my questions, I may wind up with it yet.

We just found 1 of these today. We were helping clean out an attick & have done the research & found an old type A BUT it is missing some key pieces: the Horn, the Gutta Percha, & the wind up key. The case, the id plate, the banner-its all in beautiful shape. What would the value be without those 3 pieces? We get 1 more chance to check this old attic so we will be searching for the missing pieces.
