This was a fantastic experience for me... I truly hope that all of you might experience an unusual find and the excitement that goes with it...

What a machine to find in the wild. I hope you also bought a lottery ticket. I'm happy for you. Jerry Blais

I have long had a fantasy of going to a garage sale and finding an Amberola 1A with a $100 price tag tucked away in a corner. Finding a XX would be a very, very close second choice.
Congrats on finding such a treasure at such an amazing price!

Curt,
I am so happy for you.
What an incredible find.
I've already cancelled my plans for Saturday.
I'm going to hit every antique shop in my county.
I hope Santa has that Tooled Leather front Credenza I've been dying to find.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Gene

Sweet!
You know what they say... "You've got to be in it, to win it!"
... and maybe just walking, to trip over it!

You must have been very good this year for Santa to send this your way. Congrats. What a wonderful find.

Congrats! I can relate to the 'trouble sleeping,' when you know you are going to pick up a machine the next day.
Can you take a picture of inside the case, showing the arm, turntable, etc. for us newbies?
Thanks and how has the sleeping been since you got it?

You really stumbled into a nice machine there, congratulations on the find! My Dad used to say that by the time you run across something like that, you've probably earned it. Good luck with the old girl now. It really looks nice in the pictures. I've seen pictures of those XX's but never pictures that show the detail and the carving as well as yours do in this thread. Those really do have some nice detail on them. Victor really did nice work on their early cabinets, even if they are kind of odd looking. I've always liked the L-door machines. There used to be an off-white L-door machine here in town that I saw a few times 40 years ago and have often wondered where it went. It was painted at the factory.
The mahogany in your XX is almost extinct now and is a rare variety. That's why those "stripes" in it are so pronounced and REALLY show off under a gloss piano finish. And that V book matching is really expensive to do because of all the waste. Not that the scraps wouldn't get used somewhere else even back then, but the larger sheet of veneer are more expensive in the first place.

I can't wait to hear what the Mooresville boys say. In their back yard even. I tried to buy it before he got it home, but you couldn't squeeze it from his hands.
