Very true...I think there a few that I can think of off hand that were not released on disc....Come Josephine in my Flying Machine and "Chicago" by Stevens.

The Stevens Trio "Chicago" was released on Diamond Disc 51120; I do know that off the top of my head as I've got all the Stevens stuff.

There were some Blue Amberols released in the 1915-1919 period that were not released on Diamond Discs; I have around eight of them. I read somewhere (I think in the book about Blue Amberols of the 1915-1929 period) that the Edison people were able to tighten up production methods by 1920 and after that no cylinders were released that were not dubbed from masters of released Diamond Discs (except in a few cases where they used pre-1915 direct cylinder masters).

But I believe those 1915-1919 cylinders released on cylinder only cannot be considered "direct recordings" as they were dubbed from disc masters that were never released as Diamond Discs. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Norman, when you say you prefer to get the music from a source, do you mean some music that has already been digitized? What was the source of Beale St. blues? Was it a diamond disc? I would be interested in single sided DDs if two sided ones are too problematic. Marc.

Yes, by doing a re-cut from a digital source. With several interesting numbers, such as Beale Street Blues, it is the only possible way to do it. This song only exists on a few Needle Type test pressings and never made into the official catalog. It was just too late (rec. Oct 4 '29). These Mal Hallet Orchestra recordings are, to what I am aware off, by far means the most progressive jazz numbers that ever made it into the Edison recording studio.

I can't say enough good things about these recordings. As usual Norman, sign me up for Beale Street!

Finally...

I have been mostly silent on my new titles, not wanting to making (again) false promises on release dates. But now, they are here, though only in quite small quantities. I am not sure how many I may have at the Wayne show. Otherwise, more should be ready in the last week of April.

In case, anyone would like to get a hold of a copy of Heigh-Ho, everybody Heigh-Ho, there are two copies left. The box label has been adapted for the new style boxes.

They are $80 each, I know it's nothing cheap but simply reflects the high production costs.

I told my friend Dan Nichols that I have it coming.He,too may get a copy.The nice thing about Norm's repro is that the record is a LOT safer for everyday use.Heck,I can also play it on my Amberola 30,unlike the original. edisonplayer
