I'm happy that you find it relatively simple. Perhaps other people, such as me, do not find it as easy as you do.
People have different abilities.
Kinda' describes me --

(hope this isn't too gross.....)

While changing out gaskets for a sound box equipped with a mica diaphragm wasn't too challenging for me in the past, as a result of an injury sustained several years ago, I only have half the "feeling" in the fingertips of one hand, so I don't think I'd attempt it today.

As for gaskets for a metal/aluminum diaphragm, such as the type used on circa 1930s/40s portables, I've never had good luck with that. (The actor "Rip Torn" comes to mind--you can Google him.)

I'll be very interested in your results.

Thank you for your gracious reply and sorry for your injury. I see the picture is all thumbs. ;)

This was one attempt at rebuilding a soundbox.
That's the reason I don't want to intervene too much.

I'm currently allowing the mica one to completely dry out then I'll fit it to the Fullotone and see what difference there is if any.

Best regards

WRichard,
Sorry if your mechanical abilities don't give you confidence, but that didn't seem to me to be the reason for your post. I appologise....
What initiated my reply was your statement: "The paper label is of no consequence. It's a cheap soundbox for a cheap machine."

Don't get harsh.
Experiments are as useful as the whole affair of listening to old records on old gramophones, in an era when you almost can find everything at the touch of the finger on your mobile phone or a mouse click :D :D :D
