Yes, point taken. We all assume that the charleston was danced everywhere from 1st January 1920 up to 31st December 1929!Lenoirstreetguy wrote: It was the fad dance of 1925-26 ... in the fall of 1927...that the Charleston phase was basically over.

Yes, judging by the number of copies that turn up, and how worn most are, I think "Blackbottom" was a much bigger dance crazy than the Charleston ever was.

Ummm, **only** £72.01 - a largish amount for a disk but not nearly what it has been bringing in consistently over the past couple of years. Sign o' the times I guess. One thing I do know is that the winning bidder will love it

Well at £0.40 per second of recording I certainly hope so - although when I bought my copy it cost me £0.45 per second and is the most i've ever paid for a single disk.OrthoSean wrote:Let's hope the winning bidder will!

The closing bid price was a bit too rich for my blood (and wallet)... at least at this point in my life. It sure would have been nice to own, tho.

72 pounds (or well over 100 U.S. dollars.) Personally, I could think of other records I'd rather drop a over hundred beans on, if I was so inclined.Tinkerbell wrote:The closing bid price was a bit too rich for my blood (and wallet)... at least at this point in my life. I've never paid that much for one record in my life.

Re: Charleston - a nice copy on ebay
Considering the fact that it's just a very desirebale title, it probaly isn't a bad price, but I also wouldn't shell out that kind of cash for that one, especially since I have four other good versions of it. I have spent much more than that on one record, several in fact, all things that I have no regrets over, either.
It would be interesting to start a thread asking how much the most anyone has paid for a prize in their collection, but not many people would answer truthfully, and of course, there is always that "I've never spent more than a dollar for a boxful at a sale" group (not that there's anything wrong with that if that's what you want to do), which was me for years until I started realizing that no matter how hard you look, some of the real "goodies" are going to cost you if you really want to have them.

EDIT: a copy of the Whiteman disc just showed up on eBay...wonder what his reserve is?

Yes, I've almost given up hope of ever finding a Charley Patton on a Paramount or Vocalion disc for a buck.OrthoSean wrote: no matter how hard you look, some of the real "goodies" are going to cost you if you really want to have them.

Barring a lottery win or some other windfall, I'll have to satisfy myself with lesser items.
And, of course, it depends on where you live. In a large metropolitan area with some history, the 78's may be easier to come by. For those who live out in the sticks, or in newer developments, finding 78's (such as on e-bay) even if having to pay more for them, may be a desirable (and understandable) way to go.
