Charleston - a nice copy on ebay

Post by Swing Band Heaven »

I see that there is a very nice condition copy of the "Charleston" as played by the Savoy Orpheans up for sale on ebay at the moment. Its a great version and it doesn't seem to appear in such good condition very often. At the **MOMENT** its still very reasonably priced at only £21. It will be interesting to see how high it goes.

Here is the link to the auction in case anyone is interested:

In case your not familiar with this version here is my you tube video of my copy.

This is really a great number and the Savoy Orpheans are one of my very favorite bands. While listening to your excellent transfer I came to the conclusion that one could call them the British Coon-Sanders Nighthawks. Too bad, I'm still looking for an Orpheans copy of Vladivostock.

Wonderful record! Thanks for the great transfer, too. For being such an icon of the 'twenties, the Charleson is an incredibly difficult record to find; any label or any band, it just doesn't show up very often. I've been a serious record collector for over 40 years and only have this song on 2 records. I have the Paul Whiteman version with the Rhythm Boys and The Ambassadors recording of Old Fashioned Love, a medley which includes the Charleston. This is on Vocalion 14686, recorded October 3, 1923 and may be the earliest recording of the song. The band includes Phil Napoleon, Earl Oliver and Miff Mole. Another Excellent version is by the Varsity Eight featuring Red Nichols.

Whiteman's Charleston isn't too hard to come by, I think.
I have a copy.

I also have Ben Selvin's The Original Charleston, but that's it for when I want to have Charleston parties. The folks are out the door pretty quick.

Interesting, I have just noticed that the HMV label on my copy is different to that in the auction - which has the earlier style of HMV label which has the gold line box around the catelogue number on the bottom right and the music type description on the bottom left.

That would be a sweet copy to own.

Hmmmmmm.... do I, or don't I? :?:

Of course, there's always the issue of it getting shipped safely across the pond -- even if it is double-boxed.

What to do, what to do... :?

I have bought lots of shellac disks from your side of the pond and had them shipped over here and I have never received one that have arrived broken. All I can say is that the seller in this case is someone I have dealt with many times before and his packing is very good....however you can never guard against the postie that uses a parcel as a football!

Yes, and unfortunately, I have seen that happen more often than I care to admit... especially when I am sitting on an airplane, looking out at the baggage handlers loading mail/packages onto the plane. It's rather frightening.
