Craigslist find VV-XVI complete with record albums

Post by mattrx »

I picked up a mahogany XVI today. The machine had all the record albums (full), and the key. It was missing one knob and needs a thorough cleaning. Anybody have a gold plated knob they want want to sell? Also, is gojo the best thing to clean the cabinet with? It was in an old house that had not been lived in for years. The place was damp and there appears to be mildew on the finish. I am looking for suggestions to properly clean this off, otherwise the finish seems to be in relatively decent shape. Some alligatoring, but no veneer is loose, and no really deep scratches. The casters, crank, and all hardware seem to be present except the one knob. There is one lift knob on the motor board, and a hole for possibly another one. Did the XVI version E have 2 pull knobs? One of the horn doors needs to be reattached, the screw holes are stripped.

I'm not familiar with the knobs on this particular version of XVI, but I might have one. Can you post a picture of the one you are trying to match?

Nice score Matt! I know they are on ebay all the time but if you are a patina fan they won't help.

Rizbone, here is a pic of the knob, Thanks! Also, there is a pic of the motor board with the one pull knob, and the hole on the opposite side. Were there 2 pull knobs? And, if anyone can help, should the speed control and brake be on the back side of the turntable? Most online pics I see have them in the front, and on my VTLA they are on the front. I want to make sure someone hasn't "monkeyed" with it.

Your machine looks legit - version E had 2 knobs at the front of the motor board (where your holes are), brake in the right rear and speed control in the left rear.

Thanks, George P. Guess I need 2 knobs. One for the board and one for the horn door.

The XVI my parts came off of was slightly earlier and had larger knobs on the bottom. Does yours have 1" or ¾" diameter knobs. Also, does the hole on your motor board go all the way through. I probably have both knobs and the screw going all the way through the door/motor board, but am not sure if I have the other style motor board knob. If this machine was supposed to have different sizes originally, I have the complete set and can send more than one. Do you need gold screws for the door?

Rizbone,

The upper knobs are smaller and are ¾ inch, the lower knobs are larger at 1 inch. The motor board knob does go all the way through and is also ¾ inch, but a slightly different style than the upper door knobs. I need the knob and screw for the motor board and one of the upper doors. I spent some time tonight with Kotton Klenser and 0000 steel wool. The cabinet looks MUCH better, but the knobs are quite dull. Maybe I can get them replated at some point in the future.

Thanks.

Here are a couple of "after photos" from the first pass of Kotton Klenser and 0000 Steel wool. I have the other horn door clamped and glued for installation tomorrow. The screw holes for the hinges were stripped.
