Does anyone know what this horn belongs to? I picked it up at an auction which had both Pathé', Columbia, and no-name phonographs and I'm pretty sure the seller did not know what part went with what machine. It certainly looks like the right type of horn for the Columbia Q, but is fancier than others I have seen. At one time it may have been painted or stained black.
Thanks

Check it really good, it looks like it might be sterling!

Re: Question on small horn
It seems a bit flimsy for a vase, but I suppose it's possible. The narrow end has been repaired but in size and weight it looks like a phonograph horn. I suppose it might be silver, but I don't really have any way to test this.

Any good jeweller or antique dealer should be able to test the metal content for you.

Very definitely the top part of a vase.

Re: Question on small horn
Too funny, perhaps I should stick a flower in it. On the plus side it may be silver, and I can leave it out for the cats without worrying about ruining a good horn. Thanks all.

Re: Question on small horn
It was probably one of those Weighted Sterling pieces from the 20's- the silver is almost paper thin and the bases were full of plaster to give support- often very attractive pieces but it was possible to tear them apart while cleaning them.

Re: Question on small horn
It is NOT a vase. It's an antique fire chief's speaking trumpet with the speaking end modified for a phonograph.

No it isn't- I've held some of those and they are larger and considerably heavier.JerryVan wrote:It is NOT a vase. It's an antique fire chief's speaking trumpet with the speaking end modified for a phonograph.

When the vase was complete it would have been similar to this.
