Victor/Edison Brake

Post by dutchman »

What is the best material to use for the brake on Victor and Edisons? I have an Edison that the material is worn out and despite moving it to make better contact with the platter it still allows the platter to creep.

I use the round leather belting that is used on pedal type sewing machines. It is easy to get from places that deal in sewing supplies and one belt will last you a lifetime. Barring that, anywhere you can get leather in a strip; it can be square in cross section as well as round but it was round in most original equipment. You can also get it pre-cut from various phono suppliers such as Ron Sitko, Walt's Musical Americana or Antique Phono Supply. Hope this helps! John P. You may also want to check that the brake spring still has enough tension as well as the mechanism itself not being partly frozen or gummed up. It should work freely without binding.

You might find some suitable leather in a Tandy leather store.

You might try opening the jaws that hold the piece of leather and repositioning the piece to make better contact, and finally re-clamping the jaws. The leather should be oiled. The intent is for the brake to gradually bring the turntable to a stop. I hope this helps. Jerry Blais

Fixed - overlapped some belt leather with contact cement. Cut it to size, oiled it and stops quietly and gently...............
