It depends on the condition of the gaskets in the recorder. The Ediphone (NOT DICTAPHONE) contains a very advanced recorder, it has the advance ball, and the recording diaphragm is very sensitive. You though get better recordings when you use a recording horn, instead of the speaking tube, that is on the unit, although for talking the speaking tube does an exellent job, however for musical recording about 30" long horn with a 6" opening, the horn in a cone shape, made out of layers of poster board, give pretty good results. You can at least record whole songs on the 6" cylinders. The Ediphone cylinders though are not very durable, the recordings wear out fairly quickly,at least playing them on the Executive model, I have does, the one that is on some of the cylinder box, it has the more squarish top, and the legs are like that of the c-250 DD machine. perhaps having the transcriber model the records do not wear as much because the reproducer is more articulated than reproducing on the recording model. The one I have is a model D from about 1936, it records really well though, in fact if you are skillful you can get the same sound as a Diamond Disc on them. The normal speed on these is about 80rpm, so you want to get them up to 160 for musical recording, they record about 5 minutes at this speed on the Ediphone blanks. You do want to stick with Ediphone brand blanks, as they are aluminum based, Dictaphone and Standard brand dication blanks are a lead based wax. I have the complete production instructons for making Ediphone Master Wax. Play the Ediphone back though with a large horn, it looks wierd but works well.
