I bought my first Phonograph - Edison standad model??

Post by berntd »

Hello all

After some time of venturing from gramophones into clocks, watches and other stuff, I suddenly deciced to buy a Edison Standard phonograph. I am very excited. I don't even have it yet and hopefully I will collect it tomorrow.

It is a restoration project and I may need help with a few things later.
At a minimum, I will need the crank, lid and horn. if anyone can help. please PM me or let me know here.

Right now, I am just excited - like always when I get a new toy :-).

Here is my first question:
How can I determine exactly what model I have?
I looked at a lot of sites but it is still somewhat unclear.

It is 2 min only and it had a gate for the mandrel.
It needs the push in crank and not the screw in type.
The reproducer apparently states Model C.

Maybe it is just a model C then?
Did the C have the push in crank or was that the B?

Best regards
Bernt

Sounds like a Model A. If so, the speed control knob will be above the bedplate. Post the machine's serial number and we'll know for sure.

Good luck!

Hi George

The serial number is S226360.

I really tried to get some pics up here but failed because after I painstakingly managed to get them into the image links, it complained that pictures can't be wider than 800 pixels.
Then when I tried to convert them to links, suddenly the page reloaded auromatially and everything I had done was gone.

@Administrator: Why can't I add attachemtns in this forum?

I have lots more questions about the parts, horn, reproducer etc. but maybe those should be in new threads?

Best regards
Bernt

I"d reccommend you e mail the Administrator as he admits he doesn't get to make it here very often.
On the Standard, alot of dealers look at the C reproducer, and, think tha't the model of the machine.
Here are some hints.
Sold in NY state only, these machines were a gateless two min. only machine.
Usually, they had a repeater mechanism , and, sold as an ICS outfit.
They did have the speed control adjustment above the bedplate.
Usually, they came in the same thick base case as the next generation model D combination, but, I have seen some in Model B cases..

Hi, the wood bedplate frame has been replaced with a home made one (at least that is what it looks like to me) and the pinstriping has been redone (sorry to say!) not really carefully. Hope the seller informed you of this if they knew.

Hi Doug,

If anything is wrong with this machine, then the guy who sold it to me didn't know.

According to him the machine belonged to his grandfather who apparently bought it in around ~1906.
He inherited the machine many years ago and then stored it together with other stuff in his garage ever since, along with some cylidner records.

It does not matter too much if there are a few small issues. I am sure that I can fix it in the end.

Let's see what the serial number reveals.

Best regards
Bernt

Bernt,

The observations by other posters appear to be accurate. Also, the "Edison" script decal on the front of the straight-edge is a reproduction. But none of that is the end of the world. Machines in much worse condition have been beautifully restored.

Your Standard is indeed a Model A. No.226360 left the factory about September 1905.

Good luck and have fun!

Thank you very much George.

Are there any pictures of what this all should look like?
I can't find any closeups or suitable pics to compare on the web at all so far.

Bernt
