I spotted an Aberola 30 with the exposed speed control. The odd thing about it was the placement of the data plate. It was mounted to the left half of the top grill. Assuming that the lid was original to that type, I felt around on the inner lid, but it did not find any holes. Also the data plate was not the brass version, it was the black and silver type.
The grill would be easy to replace.
I guess the missing data plate is ok.
I have not seen this before and just expect it to be a misguided application.
Anybody seen an example this this?
James.

Re: Amberola 30 question
I think the Amberolas had name plates attached in numerous locations. I have an early Amberola 30 with the speed control through the gear cover. The ID tag is behind the horn grill on the inside right side of the cabinet. You'd have to look for it to find it. Jerry Blais

Re: Amberola 30 question
Does this one have the pinstiping on the gear cover? If so, please know that the governor is different that the later models and hard to find. If this machine is not working, take this into consideration.

Re: Amberola 30 question
About a month ago I stumbled across an Amberola 30 with the exposed speed control and pinstriping. It's missing the grilles and there's no data plate - nor holes where it might have been mounted. You just solved the mystery for me - thanks! (Stamped inside the rear of the cabinet, easily seen from above, is the serial number: 7269.)Roaring20s wrote:I spotted an Aberola 30 with the exposed speed control. Re: Amberola 30 question
I recently sold an Amberola 30 which had the nickel plated reproducer and the concealed speed control.
It also had no data plate, and no evidence to suggest that one had ever been fitted.

Re: Amberola 30 question
Gramophoneshane,
I always assumed the silver and black name plated machines were the earliest followed by the gold plates. How did you come to the conclusion that the later ones were silver and black again? Serial number?
Thanks!
Steve

Seconding that: at least with the DD machines, I've assumed that the switch from the black plates to brass came in about 1919....Andersun wrote:Gramophoneshane,

Re: Amberola 30 question
Great responses, thanks!
I will try and check it out again this week and follow-up with the following.
Two screws or brads seems the norm.
Has anyone seen a grille with two unidentified holes?
Are the later data plates mounted to the bedplate with rivets or tinny bolts?
Thanks for the heads-up about the potential governor issue

- - If it has any pin striping on the gear cover.
- What is the serial number.
- Re-examine the case for holes.
- Check for any stamped numbers on the case.
