drilling out records

Post by Dave D »

Can anyone tell me the best way to drill out regular 78 rpm records to make them playable on a Standard Model X? I assume just my drill press and the correct drill bit, but maybe I am wrong. Do they crack when drilled?
Thanks,
Dave D

Ouch!! Over the years I have run across many records that were drilled out to fit Standard spindles-- Including a (formerly) nice Margaret Woodrow Wilson Red Cross record (which i still have) and many other nice and somewhat rare records-- Instead of drilling or reaming, I'd suggest buying one of the turntables that adapt Standard TM's to play 'regular' records. They appear on Ebay from time to time-- I believe JAS phonos is making them.

Just looked at Ebay-- Here's an item number from an adapted turntable that recently sold-- You could contact the seller, JAS and he may have others. Ebay # 321047333664

I thought I would get more for this fairly common machine if I included a bunch of rare records that would be made to fit on it...

:o Please tell me this is an early April Fool's joke, or that I am misunderstanding you. Are you actually saying that you want to ruin some good records so that you can include them in the sale of a machine!?

There are plenty of ordinary records out there, I don't think a dozen common victors will be missed. At least someone may be playing them. In the future there are going to be more records than collectors. Just don't take a really good and early comic song or a hot jazz scroll victor. There are and abundance of bat wing victors out there. How many acoustic Paul Whiteman records do we all need??
