Best Finds of 2008!!

Post by solophoneman »

I thought I would start this thread so members could post their best Phonograph, Gramophone, Victrola, or related finds for 2008. We could include rare and unusual records here as well. I will start it off with one of mine. This is a Sonora Elite that I found on Craigslist. The machine was also full of records, and there were a few good one's that slid back into the rear of the storage cabinet and had been hidden back in there for many decades, also back in there I found a beautiful 50 page Sonora Brochure of all the Luxury models offered by Sonora in the 19 teens, there was also an official looking Sonora Guarantee stuffed back in there as well. Here is my Elite playing a really nice version of the "Charleston" on a Bell record from early 1925.

Dave,

You’re going to inflate John’s ego so much that he won’t be able to get out of his apartment... ;)

That being said, though—for me it would have to be the music everyone has posted on this board and its previous iteration, although I am also including music mailed to me by board members. There’s something to be said for having a music collection that spans from 189?-2008. :D

Lets see... Ifound many good deals...

Well first at the Wayne show i got the special reproducer for my GEM model A. :P
Then i got a copy of Immortality by William Jennings Bryan for $38!! with original box and top! there is a crack in it but the crack starts at the end then goes into the first 2 grooves then shoots staight back to the edge where it start. So even if it breaks off it will only take a tiny part off with it...
Then i got some Christmas cylinders, some brown wax and a 2 copies of The Yankee Doodle Boy.I was only expect 1 copy but the other wasnt marked and the seller was selling a lot of 11 cylinder all together.I think i payed $9.99 for the lot of 11...

I previously (in another place at another time) mentioned my auction win of 300+ Edison DD's for a staggering $1..
I also acquired a nice VV-230... but not for a dollar!!

I guess my best score of '08 was an edison D-25 Jacobean. From what I can tell there are not many of these around and I got it for not much money.

Brad,

Very nice (and an excellent photo of it, as well). Does it sound as good as it looks?

It sounds very good, though not quite as loud as my C-250. Interesting thing about this machine is the reproducer has a copper diaphragm. I have never seen copper in a DD repro before or since.
