Victrola VV-405S

This is my VV 405S. It has a Freed Eiseman radio installed. The VV 405S does not have the typical Victor ID tag...The ID is on a plain tag under the turntable..This one is marked "VVS405..4571"..At this time in Canada you had to buy a licence to own and operate a radio reciever..This was good for a year..This licence attached came with the machine...The machine to the right is an RCA-Brunswick

I have always felt that the 405 is the most handsome console Victor produced.
Radio Licenses were supposedly required until 1953. My father always said that avoiding the license fee was the national pastime after hockey. The fine for not having a valid license was a sum" not to exceed $25.00" with the possibility of having your set seized by His Majesty's officials. Every so often an inspector would tour the countryside scoping out radio aerials, but as far as I've ever heard all they made the miscreant do was purchase a license.

Beautful machine. Having an FCC amateur radio license since 63, using a transmitter at 1,000 watts on CW,I found the warning on the license amusing "avoid excessive regeneration which will result in the receiver going into oscillation." Going into oscillation, and the resultant emissions/harmonoics would definitely load up the front end of another real close receiver and ruin that individuals listening pleasure. However,I can't imagine the strength of these oscillations being more than a microwatt in strength. -- but hey, I just read it with my own eyes..............

I have a 405 myself, and agree - they are quite handsome and have sizeable horns. I've read that Victor considered refitting the unsold stock of these high end consoles with small orthophonic horns.
