Nice Edison DD Console - Allentown, PA Craigslist

Post by De Soto Frank »

Looks really solid and intact. Finish seems decent. Has buttons for 10 & 12 " discs.

No connection to seller, or any vested interest other than seeing this get a good home.

Extremely clean machine with some nice extras, I agree.

Which guts does this one have?

Thanks,

Well, it's a BC-34, so it would actually have one of the smaller horns - a #150, or (if it's a very early one) a #100. It also has a single spring motor.

As said already, probably the 150 horn ... the 10 & 12 buttons seem to be on all of these ... very quiet motor ... speed control very user UNfriendly - it's under the motor plate & requires a tool.

It looks nice, it's local, I don't have a Diamond Disc machine. Now only if I had the room for it lol.

I have a BC 34 that I rarely play, mostly because of the thinner sound than the upright laboratory models, but also because I dislike have to lean down to wind it...and I'm vertically-challenged as it is!

Did this one really have the "under the bedplate" speed control? I had one years ago but don't recall.

Any Edison single spring DD motor has more than enough power for anything except the later long plays.

I also agree that the uprights sound a bit better, the horn being a bit higher, unless you are sitting on the couch!

I love the sun porch that currently holds that Edison console. If I had more room in my house (a 1970s split level) I'd collect extra machines, sure as shootin' -- and for all its technical limiations (small horn; lack of easy access to speed control, etc.) I'd buy it.

I have a BC-34, my first phonograph, and it is plenty loud for a 300 sqft room. The single spring motor runs through both sides of a regular DD easily. It did not become Edisons best seller for nothing...

Well, the one in my dining room has it hidden, as does this one - check the photo in the ad . :)
