Yes, it was a specially painted model, in this high deco fashion. See Baumbach's "Look for the Dog" (everyone should have a copy!). The oak finish itself is reminiscent of fumed oak, but I'm not sure it is precisely that.

I note that it's a stamped steel horn; how does the sound compare to the Credenza?

I have an 8-12, 8-9, early 2-door Credenza and a later 4-door.
To me, the 8-9 sounds best!
I love mine.
It would be the last machine I'd have if I was forced to liquidate my entire collection.

I would also love to own an 8-7 and 8-8.

I think the horn really makes all the difference - I think those 3 machines, the 8-7, 8 and 9, were the only victor models to use an all metal ortho horn. I've got a small hmv 157 also with an all metal, but smaller, horn, and it always blows away all my other machines (aside from my 8-8), even my victor credenza.

As I recall the 8-7 was fitted with a wood/cast iron horn quite similar to that of the 8-30. The 8-9 shared its second-generation all metal horn with the 8-8, 10-35, 8-35, 8-36, 8-10, and 5-30. The alst three of these machines being primarily for export.

Note that the excellent HMV "Re- Entrant" machines were introduced shortly AFTER the new metal-horned Amercan models, and so these late American machines are the exact contemporaries of the Re-Entrant line.

The better known first series American Orthophonic machines had no equivalents in the British line, their place being filled by the "Saxophone Horn" machines with the No. 4 reproducer.
