Wanted for VV-XI

I need to fill an empty VV-XI cabinet. Especially need motor with motor board and horn. This is a 1915-1916 model with a G suffix serial number, but I'd take anything that fits at this point. (See my post in "Machines," subject Auction gold, for photos of the cabinet.)

Also need louver unit that covers the horn and the horizontal record cabinet shelves ... and the back panel behind the motor compartment but these latter can wait if necessary.

One way to obtain this inexpensively is through Craigslist in your area. There are usually several XIs that can be had for $200 or under.

...but why dismantle a perfectly good working machine just to piece together another machine? Doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

The VV-XI was made for a long time and went through several different motor, tone arm, and reproducer mechanical changes. Could you tell us the information on the ID tag? You don't want to end up with an incorrect motor that requires drilling an additional crank hole. Jerry Blais

Your XI-G was made in 1916; it's about 91 thousand ahead of mine (370333G), made in June 1917. I agree with Retrograde about the pointlessness of dismantling some other XI-G for parts, unless your cabinet is exceptionally choice, like one of the oak finishes, for example. The XI was produced in massive numbers through the years (around 850,000 between 1910 and 1921), but as Jerry says there were many model and fitment changes during those years of production, and in order to end up with an authentically reconstructed piece, you'd have to equip your cabinet with the correct parts for its serial number. IMO this will be more trouble than it's worth, but then again I already have a complete as-built XI-G so that's easy for me to say. Just my $.02-worth

Thank you for all the input. I agree with "Henry" in that it is senseless to buy another compete machine just to gut it for parts for my present gutted cabinet. Then I'll have a new gutted cabinet for which I will need parts, etc.etc.

Since out of principle I will not leave a machine incomplete (nor will I deliberately gut one to sell its parts on eBay just out of greed; I have too much respect for these historical artifacts for any of that) I will just wait and wait until the correct parts come up. It's a beautiful cabinet just as it sits so it will bring some level of pleasure till then.

Will you be attending union this year? I think I have just about all the parts you need from a pretty destroyed 1915 XI SN:129461G that I picked up. It was finished in Red Mahogany, I'm having a tough time telling what finish yours is.

I'm going against other posters' opinions here by stating my belief that your XI cabinet is oak. Furthermore, it appears to me, from what I can judge from the photographs, that the outer lid and cabinet top edges have been stripped (note lighter tone!), and the rest left alone. In short, an unfinished refinish job! See http://forum.talkingmachine.info/viewto ... =2&t=12612 . Although I guess it's possible that it's an uncompleted cleaning job, in which case the rest of it might clean up to match the lid and look real good.

If this were my cabinet, I don't think I would bother with replacing the missing parts, *unless* (and this is a very big qualifier) I went ahead and refinished the whole cabinet to match the lid. I'd rather look for a good original example, but that's just my opinion. In any case, good luck to you!
