FOR SALE: Pathéphone no.12 gramophone restoration project

Post by kirtley2012 »

I have decided to sell my Pathéphone, it is missing the horn, elbow and motor, it is too much of a restoration project for me to complete at the minute, and im saving for other things so it needs to go!
for those not following the attempted repair of this machine, someone in the past hacked in a garrad motor, the calved out the motor board, luckily though it was only on the underside and can be repaired, the original motor is long gone and it has had about 3 motors following its removal!
the Pathé soundbox is good, the stylus seems fine, i dont have another Pathé nor a Pathé record to test it, ive had a look under a magnifying glass and all seems fine!
it should be a fine restoration for someone wanting to undertake it!, there has also been a second winding hole drilled and the original covered, one corner column missing.
a very ornate case, original back bracket, tonearm, soundbox etc.
asking £200, collection preferred from newcastle, UK, but i will post worldwide if needed, at a cost of course.
All pot metal is good, i had to repair where the tonearm attaches and swivels, this was broken in two places because of someone putting pressure on the tonearm and snapping it, it has been repaired for a couple of months now and holding up well!

It's worth what someone is prepared to pay for it, and as no-one has shown any interest whatsoever at that price, maybe you should reconsider?

Kirtley, I think you should keep this one. Next time you contemplate a project machine I want you to take this out and look hard at it for a long time before you spend your money.

It happens to all of us- I have a Columbia AZ which needs only the spring contact reproducer - which happens to be one that is worth more than the complete machine. I've considered dropping it off a bridge to rid myself of it.

.....on the other hand ebay might be your friend. Everyone and his dog knows the story, but a 99p start might generate some interest. That is if you want shot of it.

The first thing I sold on ebay was a tandem I bought on-line for £1030 - and it didn't fit me. It should have been perfect, but it felt massive. After five miles I knew I would never be happy on or safe on it. I only lost £320, but it was a relief to get rid of the mistake.

If you want to sell it for the price it's genuinely "worth", you'll have to make it available to French eBay. I've seen that back-bracket fetch more than 200 Euros alone on French eBay in recent times! It's true that no one has so far expressed much interest here but let's be honest the TMF is hardly the centre of gravity for all things Pathé related, is it? Many French collectors will not even know what the TMF is.

The problem Kirtley has is that not many collectors outside of France know the difference between a Pathé 12 and a Pathé 30! In truth the 12 was a high quality machine getting towards the top of the horn model range but it never was the best. The '14', '16' and '18' / '180' were all better models. Having said that, most people will be able to count how many examples of all those other models they've ever seen (in total) without using a single finger! The '12' therefore represents the best Pathé model available after 1910 that is most likely to be found today

It is sought after. Even a wreck!

But if you do the maths, you'll quickly discover that the fastest route to cash for Kirtley would be to advertise it on French eBay or UK eBay (with worldwide delivery) in separate parts. The soundbox is worth between £35-50 with that tube connector. The back-bracket is sought after as I've already said. That leaves a tone-arm and box left? I'd list the box separately on its own with nothing attached to it. The tone-arm could be listed separately. That's four listings without reserve. I'm betting Kirtley would be "quids in" by then.
