I wanted to disassemble, clean, and re-lube my VV-IV today but I'm stuck. I thought there would be a set screw to remove the central shaft through the spring barrel, but that does not appear to be the case. How do I get the spring barrel out?
Thanks!

1. Not a VV-IV, no, or I wouldn't be askingDuchesne wrote:1. have you done this before?

2. Understood and will post some when time permits, but I'm also sure there are people here who can do this with their eyes closed!

I've done an XI, a XIV, and a XVI, all of which had a set screw to release the spring barrel. I've also done many Edisons...

Yeah, I asked that because I've heard it can be dangerous to open the spring barrel. Since you've done many.... And yes there are those here who can do it with their eyes closed.

Re: Victor VV-IV motor diassembly?
I suspect there are a few different motors depending on when it was made. On some there is a smaller tapered pin through the winding gear which can be covered with grease and hard to spot. Once you knock that out (let the spring wind down first)you should be able to tap the shaft out. I have seen others where you remove a pillar off of the motor frame, but that one is pretty obvious. There are probably other configurations as well.

I haven't gotten that far - I can't open the spring barrel if I can't remove it!Duchesne wrote:52089 wrote:1. Not a VV-IV, no, or I wouldn't be askingDuchesne wrote:1. have you done this before?

Re: Victor VV-IV motor diassembly?
The first thing you will need to do is remove the threaded shaft that the crank screws into. This is done by removing the small lock screw that is located on the side of the shaft going through the first winding gear. After removing that screw the winding shaft should slide out forward-if it is stuck you can screw the crank into it and pull it out that way.
After that is removed the first winding gear will fall out the side. That gear has a small lip on it which is holding the main spring shaft in. Once that gear is removed you can slide the spring shaft out forward, and then pull the spring barrel out sideways.
Here is a picture that points to your lock screw in red, and shows the direction the part should be removed in yellow: Hope this helps.

Re: Victor VV-IV motor diassembly?
It did, thanks! I had figured out that the screw needed to be removed, but then I had no idea how to get that gear out of the way. I did need to use the crank to pull out the shaft, but after that it was about 30 seconds to disassemble everything else. Thanks for the clear instructions!
The spring barrel retaining ring on this one was mercifully easy to pop off. After packing some moly grease into the barrel, replacing the ring 99% of the way was easy. I used a screwdriver as a lever to get the last bit back inside the barrel rim. Once I give the other parts a good degreasing and regreasing, it should be good for another 100 years.
Thanks again,
Kevin

Does the governor run smoothly? I noticed, in the picture, that one of the weights is different than the other two.
