Veneer issue - looking for help

Any good wood guys out there? I just picked up a really nice Pathé oak table top machine that has the outside top of the lids veneer looking like ocean ripples and some veneer is also missing on two corners. A round dark spot in the center tells me this was caused by a wet clay flower pot, basicly old water damage. The inside of the lid has no problems at all, just the outside flat top veneer. I have never replaced oak veneer or any wood veneer as a matter of fact. Any recomendations? I can match the finish, I have done that pretty well in the past. The lid could be shipped to someone for re-vennering as it is not that large or heavy. It's a really nicly made machine and plays loud and clear. Thanks, Brian.

New veneer can be laid down easily if you remove all the old veneer down to a flat, smooth layer; then, paint the old veneer layer with two coats of yellow glue only slightly thinned with water, allowing to dry between coats. Paint the curl-in side of a sheet of new veneer with two coats of yellow glue in the same manner. When ready to apply, align the sheet of new veneer on the lid and iron with a hot, dry electric iron using a cotton cloth between the iron and the veneer. Yellow glue is also thermosetting and the two glue surfaces will melt together. Use a razor blade or Exacto knife to trim, and finish.

Thanks JohnM, I will give it a try,,,, but where can one find / order oak veneer? Home Depot has none, nore does Lowes. I even tried a local craft store and theyb only carry Balsa Wood. Again, thanks!

You can find just about any veneer on Ebay. I've done veneer work on a clock and used contact cement. Wasn't hard and turned out very nice.

You may also want to try a hardwood store if you are anywhere near one. They typically have a selection.

Try Woodcraft and Rockler for veneer. You may find replacing the veneer easy and matching the finish hard. I would recommend that before your replace the veneer, take a small piece of the veneer you intend to use and see if you can match the finish. I don't know if the Pathé' oak was fumed or just finished.

Personally I would try the repair what is there first. I won't cost a lot money wise to try, just time.

I get my veneer from Bob Morgan veneer. He has quite a selection including veneer with backing. Good luck.
