Grafonola 85 Push Button record rack makeover

Post by a12548 »

Keeping the original felt on the Graf 85 push button eject style rack was out of the question. It was disintegrating and shredding. I methodically (and tediously) removed each slat which are extremely thin fragile slats, and cut and reglued and stapled the new felt in. The staple ends were compressed so as not to scratch the records as they eject. The original had staples as well. I was missing 2 slats and obtained some hobby wood panels from Michaels and cut to exact size.

Very nice looking restoration! What is the mechanism that ejects a record from the slot when a button is pushed? I've never seen one of these in person. Did you have to rebuild each mechanism as well as the felt-lined guides?

The push button is on a rod that presses the top of a wood lever, the bottom of the lever swings forward and pushes the record out. When you put the record back it resets the button. Effective, and it looks fancier than it is.
