DD on a 78?

Post by ambrola »

If someone plays a DD on a 78 with a steel needle one time, does it ruin the record?

Yes. The steel needle will rip into the "condensite" surface of the DD and destroy the grooves instantly.

Play your DDs on a DD machine, or maybe a restored Brunswick Ultona, but that's it.

I have never made that mistake, but a copy of LUNF is on eBay that in the description they played it on a Victrola. I just didn't know 1 time would destroy it.

Playing a DD on a Victrola one time will not necessarily destroy the record, particularly depending on the condition of the steel needle. It could cause some audio damage, but probably nowhere near a total loss. I have several DD's that I played that way when I was 12, before I knew better, and they still play.

The needle might just stick in the groove and stop the turntable anyway. If the motor isn't very powerful.

I think I've seen DD's sold by that guy before. If I remeber right, he said he tested them on an Orthophonic model and that the sounded "great." Bull. They would sound terrible. The pictures of the discs looked good, but knowing what they were played on scared me away.
