So basically you extended the limit loop? How far? I have an Edison recorder with a broken loop: if I replaced it with a lengthened one, would the effect be the same?

The angle of the cutting stylus changes as the
weight swings to accommodate various diameters
of the blank.
The range which was established by Edison and
made at the factory for these recorder limit
loops takes into account several very subtle
variables that are the result of changing
the diameter of the cylinder, and therefore
the angle of the cutter relative to the blank.
Even within these factory limits, one will find
that there are certain diameters within this
range that record better than others.
I, personally, would not want to attempt
to 2nd-guess what Mr. Edison and his large staff of workers found in their endless experiments and tests that they did.
There is simply no way on God's green earth
that we, today, can come close to presuming
to know better than they did because they had
the tools and the manpower to do all the tests
required to lay down the groundwork for
establishing the manufacturing standards as
we see them still intact today on these parts.
I would highly recommend staying within the
diameter range established by the original
limit loops.
