My Standard X doesn't have a crank escutcheon either, and shows no sign of there ever being one. I've been told that they didn't come with one, but have seen some myself with them.
Maybe they were made both ways?

I've seen them both ways. On your machine, you can see an indication, a circle where the escutcheon used to be. If there is no indication of the circle, then the machine never had one. The escutcheon is very similar to an Edison cylinder machine.
