While checking out a link on another topic, I noticed this video of a weight-driven Frankenphone:

Pretty clever - but will it play a 12 inch record?

I couldn't actually see the weight system myself, but it sure sounds like a cool idea.Lucius1958 wrote:While checking out a link on another topic, I noticed this video of a weight-driven Frankenphone:

This one is weight driven. The Grandmother Phonograph.
Looks like a Victor motor in it with a weight instead of the springs driving it. Very cool.

I'm pretty sure I saw an ad from the 1880's featuring weight driven phonographs. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Yes. In January 1878, Augustus Stroh was commissioned to build an Edison-type tinfoil phonograph. The following month, he demonstrated a sophisticated weight-driven tinfoil model, which still survives in private hands and is pictured in Discovering Antique Phonographs.bbphonoguy wrote:I'm pretty sure I saw an ad from the 1880's featuring weight driven phonographs. Stroh also designed a more refined weight-driven tinfoil phonograph which was marketed by the London Stereoscopic Company in the 1880s. An example of one of these machines is also shown in Discovering Antique Phonographs.

The Lioret Phonograph also was fitted with a pull-weight motor, some ten years later -- http://www3.sympatico.ca/jean-paul.agna ... ioret3.htm

Hi Lucius:
If you maximize the video to full screen, you can just make out the shadow of the spring barrel. You might also have to lighten the resolution of your monitor to see it.
As for not embedding the video, that's because it's the new "https" format. You could try removing the "s"--just start it with "http" to see if it will show up.
