Pictures fron the Wayne, NJ Show on Sunday

Here are some pictures from today at the Wayne show. It was a very nice day and I think a very good show. There was a verg good crowd and sales vere very good. Hope other did as well.

I am surprised to see a Edison dealer metal sign from the small town next to me here in southern Il. Part of the name is obscured but I can make out the name of something ending in effry ,music and then the partly hidden Centralia Il. I will have to see what the local historical society knows about the dealer? You never know what you may see in these photos!

I see in your pics there is a Victor 0 inside and another outside. Maybe even a couple others that didn't make it into a pic. I've been looking for a decent one for a while. Anyone have an idea what the asking/selling price was on either?

My only complaint over the years is that I feel radios belong at radio shows,,, unless it is a radio/phonograph combination. More and more radios are entering these shows - what's next antique phones, typewriters, televisions ?? Just my two cents....

I was impressed with the number of young people at this show. I'm not exaggerating when I say there must have been at least two dozen attendees in their teens and twenties. Most of these youngsters were strangers to me, and they seemed to be having a good time.

Coincidentally, when I arrived back home this evening there was an email for me from the Director of the City of London Phonograph and Gramophone Society. I quote part of it:

"While it is easy to write off the collection of early machines and records as an anachronism which will disappear as people who can remember their daily usage drop off the perch, there seems to be an emerging interest from younger people and we should be ready to meet their needs. In some cases this comes from a revival of vinyl, but there is also a new interest in early 20th century things over here which spreads into things with horns."


Evidently, the Wayne show this weekend was not an anomaly in its attraction for a significant number of young people. The Brits are seeing it as well. Whether this age group continues to grow in number at the shows remains to be seen, but it's certainly nice to see.

Plus there seems to be an interest in "period bands" such as Vince Giordano and the Night-HawKs, Max Raabe & the Palast Orchester, Bratislava Hot Serenaders, Paragon Ragtime Orchestra, and so-on... while not strictly talking-machine related, there are some young folks "diggin' " the music of the Talking Machine Era, and I think that leads some of them into actually experiencing "the real thing"...

or maybe it's just the latest Hipster trend...

I am in complete agreement with the above observation and criticism. In the UK next month (May 11th) we have our annual National Vintage Communications Fair (NVCF). It is the single event of its type in the UK and hosts many sellers offering radios, telephones, televisions, ephemera, early technology, records and lastly and very much leastly, talking machines. Presumably this would be your worst nightmare as it is increasingly the case that radios and telephones are taking over and each successive year fewer and fewer sellers are in attendance selling phonographs and gramophones. It is not unusal to see the handful of dealers who are interested in this field to be selling just odd spares and no machines whatsoever. One stand at Wayne probably hosts more machines than the entire NVCF event in the UK will see next month!

Radio collecting outnumbers phono collecting by about 30 to 1 in the UK. Why? Who knows; in a few years none of the sets will be able to pick up much unless they are heavily modified. To me this is a little futile but try telling that to the long line of collectors who are enthusing over wooden cased radio sets in the queue waiting to get in. Last year I overheard (or endured) three collectors talking non-stop for 25 minutes about a single valve! In order to counter the radio-centric pre-event queue conversations, I seized upon a gentleman who walked past clutching a tatty HMV 101 portable. He must have wondered why I was so interested in seeing inside it. No, it wasn't to count the screw heads on the motor-board, it was more to show appreciation for a non-electrical item. The radio guys shut up for a few minutes, looked at each other blankly, ignored the portable and then continued with the valve discussion!

This year I will hopefully continue my pro-talking machine anarchy!

One of the Victor O's was actually a modified Victor E with the O horn.

I bought the other one -- an actual Victor O. Spent a ton of money on it (for what such a machine is worth), but I fell in love with the little bugger.

I'm glad you mentioned this, George. We noticed it too. There have always been a handful of people in their 20s there walking around, but this time, there were a LOT more. Most of them I saw were eagerly digging through records. One couple that I saw as we were leaving were checking out an Edison machine and looked like they were about to buy it. Either way, it was great to see and a few that I spoke with were very enthusiastic!
