Celilian Melophonic (Ortho-clone) on CL Seattle

Post by fourforty »

Seller says everything works. Cabinet looks good and most importantly, the tone arm is intact. They want $100

A few years back there was a forum thread on these Montgomery Ward machines:

They don't have an exceptional sound, but if you like the cabinet that is a good price and putting a matched set of albums into it would bump up the looks quite a lot. The soundbox is probably a Toman - a widely used Orthophonic clone. If they are in decent shape they aren't bad- not the response of a Victor but decent volume.

Crazy me, I bought it. I had written the seller before I had seen your posting. It seemed to run and play fine. It has plenty of volume.

Mike's on a roll here...
Counting the four Edisons he bought off Craigslist last week, This makes five machines for only $700, right?
Wish I had that much room at my house!

Here is the reproducer that the Cecilian came with. The only marking is PAT. PEND. underneath the 'neck.' Also, how does it come apart? Does the back unscrew?

BTW, they are all at my office. No phonos are allowed at home! Any suggestions on how to get around that one?
