FOR SALE: Edison Let Us Not Forget Diamond Disc - $75

Post by Garret »

Up for sale here is a very nice copy of Edison's famous speech on the close of World War One, "Let Us Not Forget." The National Airs of the Allies is on the reverse side of the disc. Sonically, this disc is excellent. While a C-matrix pressing, the speech still comes through quite crisply an clearly. In fact, a very knowledgeable collector friend who once heard this recording indicated that he had never heard such a clear sounding copy of this recording. For the C-matrix pressing, it rates an E sonic grade. Visually, the disc is not perfect. There are three small edge bites on the "National Airs" side, not affecting play. There is also a chip on the "Let Us Not Forget" side, which, while close to the grooves, does not affect play. In all, it's generally an E- visual grade.

Full color photos of the disc are below. The full-sized original images can be found at box.net via this link: https://app.box.com/s/8a5qh4mbmr0jmt4vsm60

I am asking $75 plus $6.45 for shipping via Media Mail in brand new box and packing. This is a phenomenal price for such a great-sounding copy. I've been collecting for years, and am starting to downsize my collection in preparation for further university studies in the sciences this fall. If this disc sells, there will be many more choice electrics that I will be offering soon. If interested in this disc, or what else I might have available, please message me through the forum or: garret.girmus "at" gmail.com. Thank you!

Not sure what you mean by a "C matrix pressing"? The LUNF take letter is "A" and the Airs take letter is "C". Is that what you're referring to or something else?

The take letter is not an indication of the "generation" of the master (or the quality of the master), because the takes are completely separate recordings, not remasters.

Ah. I was once told that the C letter indicated a poorer quality pressing. I stand corrected! It's been a while since I've delved substantially into the nitty gritty of all things Edison. ;) That said, I hope that my description of the record and pictures stand for themselves, and I back both with a money-back guarantee. If you're interested in this disc, please send me a message!

No, in fact Edison generally required a minimum of 3 good takes (A, B, and C) for each side of each Diamond Disc. These were coupled seemingly at random, so it's theoretically possible to find up to 9 versions of many discs (takes A/A, A/B, A/C, B/A, etc.) Takes are usually pretty similar, but not always, particularly on jazz selections where the solos can vary greatly.

In fact, on good sellers, you can find take letters past "C", because they would re-record and assign new take letters. The highest I have personally seen is "H".

Edison, of course, broke his own rules on LUNF. Only takes A and B were released. I understand take C was recorded but was not released.

Price lowered to $75. This is a pretty good deal if you are looking for this disc. If I don't get any interest before Saturday, expect to see it on eBay this weekend.

Thanks!
