Why is it in the Gravel. The finish is very nice on it. Amberola 1-A the best Edison cylinder mechanism. An Amberola 1-A mechanism was used as the master recorder to record the electric 5000 series Blue Amberols. The Electric cutter was mounted on a microscope stand.

Interestingly I have a 1-B cabinet sitting in my shed sans motor (stolen before I got it) and reproducer.

I'm not that familiar with the Edison Amberola 1A or B. To my untrained eye, they look like an Opera mechanism and bed plate. Are there differences between the two? Can the Edison Amberola 1A or B fit into an Opera case or vice-versa?

IIRC, the 1B, III, and Opera all used the same mechanism, which at first glance looks similar to the 1A motor. However, they are 2 completely different designs.

The 1A is belt driven, the others are not.

The 1A combines the start/stop lever with the reproducer up/down lever. They are separate on the other machines. The 1A also has a separate "on/off" lever, but it does not start the motor, it simply allows/prevents movement in the governor.

There are several other differences as well.

A 1A motor can fit into a 1B case and vice versa. Because of the way the motor mounts in the cabinet, I doubt the Opera motor could be used in a 1A/1B cabinet, but I could definitely be wrong there.

Thanks for the clarification. One of the reasons I ask this question is if I ever find an Opera at a reasonable price, I want to make sure that it has a correct Opera motor/mechanism in an Opera case. I have heard of situations that am Amberola motor/mechanism was fitted into an Opera case. That's what I want to steer clear of.
