Oxidized Bronze Finishes

We have a young neighbor who has brought us a complete Victor R that was uncovered in his great grandfather's musty basement after having been down there for what had to have been several decades. The oxidized bronze is needing cleaned up, and I honestly do not want to mis-lead this young guy and end up applying something that is too harsh for this type of finish that will harm it. I would imagine that it would even be possible to remove this type of finish if too harsh of a product was used or too much force was applied in the process. There is a combination of what appears to be a little rust, mold, oil/grease, and just good ole tarnish on this bedplate. So, my questions are...what would be the recommended method to clean this up, and with what products; and, once cleaned up nicely, is there something that can be applied to gloss/seal the appearance??
Am I making any sense??

Try GOOP waterless hand cleaner without pumice, available at WalMart in the auto parts dept. It is a good cleaner for oil, grease and grime but is not too harsh and will not damage the oxidized finish. The nice thing is that it works on wood, also.
