Report from auction in Breinigsville, PA

Post by alang »

Went to the auction in Breinigsville, PA Yesterday. It was a long day after driving 3 hours to Wayne in the morning and the auction only starting past 5pm. When I left at 10pm they were just finishing up the auction. Even though attendance was good, bidding was going slow and selling prices were pretty low I thought. Some machines got unsold and many went really cheap. I really regretted not having more space in the house. I brought home three smaller machines, some records and horns and still had a less than happy wife.

Here is the auction listing with most of the achieved selling prices without commission etc.

That is an amazing piece of work, thank you, Alang!

It appears that the more common models were quite reasonable to me, especially the Triumphs!

Wow. Has the market bottomed out? Was there something substantially wrong with each one of these phonographs?

What was really shocking to me that Victrolas and other cabinet machines had a very difficult time attracting any bids at all. There were a few that were not even listed in the catalog that sold towards the end for very little money. A Credenza I think went for $350, another large orthophonic went for under $100. Record cabinets went for as little as $30 or even less. I did not follow all the record sales at the end, but boxes full with nice cylinders went for $25 etc. Maybe there was just too much stuff there?

I did not catch the price for the gold plated Columbia Q, maybe someone else can fill that in?

Thanks
Andreas

The auctioneer who apparently has some Victrolas and phonographs himself regretted several times that he was not allowed to purchase, that's how low prices were at some times. I had the feeling that the sale of large machines especially was very difficult, which could be caused by several large collections having hit the market more recently. I was especially shocked by how low some Victor horn machines went; a Victor VI with wood horn for $2100, a Victor V with wood horn for $1250, a victor E for $600. Even the coin-op, the trademark and the lever wind Berliner did not bring close to what I had expected. A good time to buy, not a good time to sell...

Thanks so much for this extensive report. It was a great deal of effort on your part just to type all this out.
It certainly looks like there were some great deals for buying, wish we could have been there.

Thanks again,
David and Lerria

I've been to auctions like that. I definitely wouldn't say anything has bottomed out. There was just too much there, especially considering the larger machines and cabinets, and not enough people with enough transportation capacity to buy it. Plus, that noncentral location on a Sunday night certainly couldn't have helped... It's why I couldn't get there at least.

Whaadaya mean, non-central? Why, it's only a few miles north of Macungie! And not all that far from Emmaus.

Where is "just outside Philadelphia," anyhow? Paoli? ;)

Well, I for my part would not have gone if it was in Philadelphia, because I don't like cities and driving in them. I had 2 ½ hours to drive to Wayne anyway, and going through Breinigsville added about half an hour to my return drive. To me that's not so bad. I would assume that most people have to drive to an auction like that anyway, so I'd rather get off the Interstate in a smaller town than in center city traffic.

Thank you for posting the results of this auction.

I guess it is human nature not to go through a little bit of pain (more than an hours drive?) on the risk of good results (not knowing ahead of time that things would sell for so little).

Those of us not so close to all these great auctions look at driving differently. We just drove 8 hours to join the OTAPS crew for their meeting and a great sale.
