Hi Recently I bought an Edison Standard with a Diamond B reproducer. There are a series of holes on the back for bracket/s 4 are arranged for the Cygnet horn and bracket, which I fitted from my Home to check and today it worked fine. However there are 4 more holes above and below the normal holes. There is also an outline around the 2 top holes. Can anyone help with the type of bracket and horn it supports. Thanks Kind Regards

Looks like a Hawthorne & Sheble No.4 crane to me, except the vertical rod might not clear the wooden motor frame.

Whatever supports they are had rounded ends and not squared off ends..

As the years passed, H&S evidently refined the appearance of the No.4 braces... I don't recall ever seeing the squared ones shown in the illustration, but in any event they wouldn't have allowed the vertical rod to clear the motor frame on the Edison "New Style" cabinets of 1901. I suspect these modified braces were introduced in 1901 as well.

It looks like you nailed it George. I guess his phonograph had two types of different Horn supports at one time...I wonder which one came first....Probably the Cygnet... If I was restoring this one..I guess either fill the holes for the H&S Brackets, or just leave them alone... I would probably put the Cygnet horn support back.

What would you do?

the H&S support was the original setup for sure as the machine predates the cygnet horn introduction plus it would be odd to swith the cygnet horn for something else.

Personally, I would leave the H & S holes alone. It shows a good, honest example of a machine being upgraded from the earlier crane, to the later Cygnet crane.

HI Thank you all for your comments. I will be leaving all holes as found. It would appear that the early crane was replaced by a Cygnet crane and horn when the machine was converted to 4 minute playing. I have attached a photo of the machine when purchased. The reproducer carriage was cut and revised so I have since put that back to original. It is interesting to note a different end gate and clip. This looks correct, the clip is spring loaded but has to be unscrewed each time to open the gate. Any comments on this? I now need to find the cranes and carriage lifting knob, which was also changed, by some previous owner.

PS Steve Medved has just replaced my diamond stylus with a new one which is absolutely brilliant.

Since we are on the topic of crane brackets, does anyone (George?) have a picture or an ad of a complete setup for a crane like this? I have 2 Edison Homes with one screw hole per bracket instead of two......

I've often wondered about what crane(s) were used with those single holes. I've seen cobbled-up stuff of course (as I'm sure you have), and simple eyelets (which I don't believe are correct), but I have no documentation for what was originally used.

The little cast piece on the base of that Home reminds me of the H&S crane base offered for the early Gem. I don't suppose it is screwed to the wooden base inside the cabinet, is it?
