Triumph Model D mandrel assembly--ANSWERED

Post by argand »

I need help assembling a Model D Triumph mandrel assembly. I took it apart to replace the center bearing but I'm not sure how the gears & feed screw go on the mandrel shaft. The new bearing has a flat side & a rounded side, does the flat side face the pulley? The mandrel shaft has a small round shallow hole on the mandrel end, does the feed screw collar set screw go there? Is this collar supposed to touch the mandrel bearing? How does the 2/4 minute pulley go on the mandrel shaft, is the set screw suppose to go in one of the indentions on that side? How much space is there supposed to be between parts?

Sorry for so many questions, but I never took apart a Model D Triumph before?
Thanks for any help you can offer?

Thanks for the help, Wyatt's instructions answered all my questions & the Model D is alive again.

Dwayne Wyatt at Musical Americana has excellent intstructions for setting these up. I refer to it each time I work on one.
Good luck.

It's hard to explain. I will try my best.....

Question1: I don't think it makes a difference which way you put the bearing in. I would have the flat side towards the pulley because the original bushing had a flat side too.

Question 2; Yes, the collar set screw goes into that hole. You must put the feed screw and collar on at the same time because they are connected together with a little L shaped bracket. The collar will touch the bearing. Make sure you have some grease or oil in between the two.

Question 3: The inner diameter of the mandrel pulley should be flush with the mandrel shaft. The secondary part of the pulley should be able to be pulled in and out and lock into both indentations on the shaft but still be able to interact with the gears.

I will heartily second the recommendation of Wyatt's excellent article. It saved my bacon when I was in a similar situation. http://www.wyattsmusical.com/2-4mech.html
