The remarkable sound of the Victrola 8 -12

Post by jfs78 »

For myself I have owned many different orthophonics from Credenzas, metal horned orthos, to the smaller horned ones. But I have found that the sound of the 8 -12 suits me better. It has a much strong base than what I have heard on others. It does not have the highs of the others either. This is good in many ways and I find it kills off more of the hiss. Although many would rather have the highs... If you have an 8 - 12 and it has a tight horn..It will be one of the finest performing Orthos. What have been the findings of others? I would like to know. Thanks Jack

I know another collector who loves the 8-12 for the sound yes, but also because it is his favorite cabinet for a Victrola Orthophonic machine. Since I like big things, I go for the Credenza, which I just bought, but don't have yet. It's going to be shipped, first to Union, then to Oregon, then to So. Calif. for the August CAPS show. I assume the Credenza would have a similar sound to the 8-12 or the 8-4, but maybe just a bit less volume. I guess the main thing is to get the reproducer rebuilt properly.

Good luck with the credenza and I hope it is a wonderful machine for you.

that's good to know! Linseed oil is cheaper than glycerine and as an artist I have plenty of turpentine and linseed oil! I think the gasket between horn and the neck is also something that needs to be replaced to stop any air leaks.
